Purpose:  This position provides an individual who will perform maintenance on the various small boats used in the delivery of training at the Center for Security Forces Learning Sites located in Little Creek, VA and Camp Lejeune, NC. This requisition is specific to the position at Little Creek, VA.
General Requirements (include but not limited to):
  • Possess high personal standards of technical knowledge and professional competence.
  • Possess the ability to perform in a military environment.
  • Possess a familiarity with the organization and hierarchy of the U.S. Navy, military rank/grade structure.
  • Possess a knowledge of Navy and military terminology, and shipboard/installation environments and configurations.
  • Possess basic computer skills, and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office®.
  • 2nd Class Swim Qualification or equivalent
  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED and five (5) or more consecutive years of related experience working on with water-jet boat propulsion systems and outboard motors.
  • Sound knowledge of all aspects of Outboard Engine repair and maintenance including but not limited to corrosion control and prevention, small craft metal repair, electrical systems, fuel systems, and gear cases.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex malfunctions – requiring knowledge of the interaction of several sub-systems.
  • Knowledge of major assemblies and systems of marine craft.
  • Skill in repairing, overhauling and rebuilding marine craft assemblies and sub-systems.
  • Skill in the use of hand tools and precision measuring equipment.
  • Skill in the use of boat engine diagnostic test equipment
  • Performs corrective and preventative maintenance on a wide range of small boats, and provides technical and logistical support for tactical small craft training including (but not limited to):
    • Mercury outboard engines
    • Marine diesel engineering systems
    • Water Jet propulsion systems
    • All types of small boat assemblies, systems, and subsystems
  • Maintains electronic service records and repair part inventories
  • Researches and prepares purchase requests
  • Receives and verifies all parts and supply orders relating to boat maintenance
  • Issues parts for repairs
  • Must possess the following professional knowledge, skills, and experience as demonstrated in their resume:
  • Assists the activity with maintaining their HAZMAT Program in accordance with Navy and Installation requirements.
  • Operates trucks, forklifts, and cranes.
  • Participates in sea trails of small boats, performed by the qualified boat instructors as required.
  • Rides the safety boat during training evolutions to provide “underway” engineering support as required.
  • Knowledge of small boat trailer repair including hydraulic surge and air/hydraulic braking systems.
  • Basic knowledge of computer operations, which is required for inventory control and boat maintenance record keeping.
  • Commitment to customer service.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain the following qualifications/certifications:
    • NAVFAC P-307 Category 3 Crane (Non-Cab) Operator Certification
    • Outboard Engine Overhaul
    • Cummins Diesel QSB 5.9cm 850 Marine Engine Skills Training
    • Mercury Outboard Systems
    • Mercury Computer Diagnostic Systems (CDS)
    • Hamilton 292 Water Jet Engines
    • Yanmar 6LY2A-STP Engines
    • Safe Industrial Truck/Forklift Operator
    • Mercury Optimax®
    • Mercury Verado 1®
    • Naval Special Warfare RIB Electrical Course
    • Naval Special Warfare RIB Maintenance Course
    • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (with DoD physical)
    • OSHA-certified Forklift License
  • Possess knowledge of inboard marine diesel engines, marine transmissions, marine cooling systems, water-jet propulsion systems and fuel systems.
  • Possess a clear understanding that the working conditions may require the mechanic to:
  • Perform work indoors, outdoors, and on the water, aboard a small boat, during periods of inclement weather, high humidity, and extensive heat or cold.
  • Work on parts that are dirty, oily, and greasy.
  • Be exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises, and sprains while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment.
  • Work in an environment where there is possible danger to skin and eyes from acids, fluids, and lubricants. Worker is expected to follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment and protective clothing as required.
  • Work extended, late night or weekend hours. (The majority of work is performed during normal daylight hours. However, urgent requirements may arise.)
  • Travel as needed to support training and operations conducted away from the primary work location
  • Frequently bend, reach, stretch, climb, and crouch
  • Perform work on top of, and under, small craft in cramped or awkward positions
  • Work while standing, lying, or sitting
  • Frequently lift and carry items weighing up to 75 pounds and often put forth similar effort in pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment, and tools
